Last week wildfires that had been plaguing other areas of the country reached the city limits of Haifa where it burned acres of trees and destroyed apartment buildings as well as making many others uninhabitable. 60,000 residents were evacuated from their homes; 1600 remain homeless. Many have returned but more than 500 apartments are still found to be uninhabitable. Schools are unusable leaving students being bussed to other facilities far away from their homes. Kindergartens and pre-schools are gone meaning these youngest residents of the city will be moved to unfamiliar surroundings in temporary arrangements. All of the city’s residents are reeling from the worst disaster that the city can remember and are in need of support and treatment to deal with their losses.
