Shaul Zaid Birdwatching Site
The Zaid Outlook pays tribute to the legacy of Lieutenant Colonel Shaul Zaid, a key figure in the early years of the State of Israel.
As the representative of the Measurement Department in the armistice committees with Syria and Jordan, Zaid courageously undertook the task of defining borders, participating in pivotal meetings at the forefront. This outlook commemorates his fearless dedication to the establishment of Israel and the crucial role he played in measuring and delineating borders that still define the boundary between Syria and Jordan.
His expertise in regional maps also contributed significantly to defense efforts. Working during British rule, Shaul Zaid possessed extensive knowledge of city maps, notably contributing a crucial map of Haifa to the defense efforts during the liberation struggle. In recognition of his determination to work under challenging conditions to establish borders, former Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin posthumously awarded Shaul Zaid a certificate of appreciation. Despite the issuance of border markers after demarcation, Zaid repeatedly returned to mark them, ensuring their enduring presence.
The outlook includes marked coordinates specifying the location of those within the area. The observation point offers a breathtaking panoramic view, showcasing the remarkable landscape. Shaul Zaid, a resident of Haifa, was not only a dedicated community activist but also a philanthropist. May his memory be blessed. His family chose to honor his memory through the Zaid Outlook, a space covering approximately 4 dunams, providing a sweeping view from Haifa Bay to Kiryat Shmona.
Part of the “Haifa Vista Trail,” the Zaid Outlook is a 60-kilometer tourist route connecting 21 outlooks along the Carmel Ridge and various points in the city. Situated on Abba Hushi Boulevard, near house number 50, the Zaid Outlook features a prominent observation terrace leading to a public garden equipped with benches for relaxation and playground facilities
